Wall Relief "Traveling on the Oshu Kaido"

壁面レリーフ「奥州街道旅姿」

The original landscape of Michinoku, visited by the renowned Haiku master

Since the opening of the current station building in 1977, a bronze sculpture by artist Kunihiko Isshiki has been displayed in front of the ticket office. The sculpture depicts a landscape centered around the "Michishirube-ishi" (Guidance Stone), which was built in Kaei era 6 (1853) and still stands in the present-day Haranomachi-Nigatake area. The figures of various travelers, including Basho and Sora from "The Narrow Road to the Deep North," evoke a sense of wanderlust.A work by the same artist, "Forest of the Seasons" is also displayed at Kotodai Park, so be sure to take a moment to visit there as well.
