Date Masamune encouraged his samurai to plant fruit-bearing trees like chestnuts and plums, as well as cedars between neighboring houses, in preparation for famine.This tradition turned his castle town into a lush, green haven.The zelkovas lining Jozenji-dori Avenue and Aoba-dori Avenue, symbols of modern Sendai, were planted after the war to restore the city, once a burnt wasteland, to a green, thriving place.The zelkova, a symbol tree, adornes the gateway to the City of Trees.
